At Gooseberry Fool, my purpose has always been about connection, community and conscious creativity, not just crafting beautiful pieces, but honouring the hands and lives behind them. That’s why I'm delighted to introduce our new artisan partners, Flowering Desert, a fair trade enterprise based in Tamil Nadu, South India.
Flowering Desert is a project rooted in values that deeply align with my own. Their mission is to help every woman who walks through their doors to 'discover her dignity, grow her skills, and thrive in community'. I had the great pleasure of meeting the founder of this incredible project last summer, and I knew the moment that we met that would be able to create something beautiful together. As a World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) Guaranteed Enterprise, Flowering Desert has been recognised for putting people and planet first, a foundational principle of ethical fashion and sustainability.
The journey of Flowering Desert began with a vision to transform lives through sustainable work. Women gain vocational training in jewellery-making and tailoring, building competencies that enable financial independence and confidence in their craft.
Many artisans come from backgrounds where work opportunities, especially that allow caring for family and home, were limited. Training in jewellery making, embroidery and sewing, empowers these women to earn fair wages, participate in decision-making and create meaningful work on their own terms.
Unlike precarious or exploitative work that some women face in parts of the global textile industry, the environment at Flowering Desert prioritises safety, health and wellbeing. Artisans benefit from:
