Why I choose women-led co-operatives for Gooseberry Fool

Why I choose women-led co-operatives for Gooseberry Fool

Female artisan

In a world that seems to prioritise speed, scale and profit, I made the decision to build Gooseberry Fool differently.

At the heart of the brand is a commitment to working with female-led co-operatives, supporting skilled women artisans and creating pieces that are not only beautiful, but meaningful. In the beginning, my Gooseberry Fool journey was centred around the craft of crochet, and creativity, which it still is today; however the driving force behind the brand now, and the decisions that I make, is the women I get to work with. They are what drive me, they inspire me, keep me motivated and remind me of the importance of the work that I am doing.

This is not simply a business decision.
It is a deeply held value.

female artisans

Every piece you see at Gooseberry Fool has been crafted by hand, in collaboration with female-led artisan groups.

These are talented women, often working within traditional communities, who bring generations of skill, care and knowledge to their craft.

By choosing to work with ethical fashion co-operatives, I am able to support:

Fair wages and dignified work

Safe, supportive working environments

Opportunities for women to provide for their families

The preservation of traditional textile techniques

This is what slow fashion looks like, people, process and purpose held with equal importance.

Why female led matters:

There is something incredibly powerful about women supporting women.

When women are given access to fair work and sustainable income, the impact reaches far beyond the individual. It strengthens families, uplifts communities and creates lasting change.

Working with female-led ethical co-operatives means:

Empowering women through meaningful employment

Encouraging independence and confidence

Supporting education and opportunity for future generations

It is a quieter kind of impact, but no less significant.

Craft over mass-production:

In choosing this path, I have also chosen to step away from mass production.

Each piece is:

Hand knitted or hand embroidered

Made using natural, sustainable materials such as organic cotton and Eri silk

Created in small batches, with time and care

This approach honours both the maker and the wearer.

It also means that every item carries a story, one of connection, collaboration and intention.

A more thoughtful and considered approach to baby clothing:

Gooseberry Fool was never created to follow trends.

Instead, it exists to offer timeless, heirloom-quality baby clothing, pieces designed to be worn, loved and passed on.

By working with sustainable fashion co-operatives, I am able to create clothing that is:

Gentle on delicate skin

Kind to the planet

Rooted in meaning and story

These are clothes for real life, for slow mornings, quiet moments and memories in the making.

Choosing connection over convenience:

Working in this way is not always the easiest path.

It requires patience, trust.

Ongoing communication across time zones and cultures.

But it also brings something far more valuable: connection.

Each collection is shaped through conversation, collaboration and shared purpose. It is a reminder that behind every piece, there are real hands, real lives and real stories.

Why does this matter?

When you choose Gooseberry Fool, you are choosing more than a product.

You are choosing:

Ethical baby clothing made with care

Sustainable children’s fashion that values people and planet

To support female artisans and co-operatives

A slower, more thoughtful way of consuming

In a world that often feels rushed, this is a small but meaningful shift.

A final reflection:

I often return to this thought:

That what we create, and how we create it, matters.

Choosing to work with female-led co-operatives allows me to build a brand that feels aligned with my values; one rooted in care, community and connection.

And I hope, in some small way, that each piece carries that forward.
